Droid Eris Froyo

Run Android 2.2 (Froyo) on Your Droid Eris

If you own the HTC Droid Eris, and you’re somewhat familiar with cell phones and the constant development of the Android operating system (OS), you probably feel left out. The Eris and its older cousin, the Motorola Droid, sparked the now insatiable Android craze that has made Android the top-selling OS in American smart phones as of August, 2010. I purchased the Eris the day after Thanksgiving–it came stock with Android 1.5 (Cupcake)–and immediately fell in love with the OS. With the recent releases of the HTC Droid Incredible, Motorola Droid X, and the Motorola Droid 2, HTC, Motorola, and Verizon have decided to push the newest OS, Android 2.2 aka Froyo, to all the “Droid” phones except the Eris. Feeling abandoned?

Now you don’t have to!

As you can see, I am running the latest Android OS on my Verizon HTC Droid Eris thanks to punk.kaos and the XDA Developers. They were able to successfully port over Froyo. I’ll run you through some simple steps on how you can be running Froyo on your Droid Eris today!

A reminder to some, a disclaimer to most

Making unofficial software and firmware changes to your handset violates the warranty of your phone; therefore, if anything goes wrong during this process or in the future, you will be unable to return the phone for a replacement unless you are able to return the phone back to its original, factory settings.

In addition, if something does go wrong, there is a chance you can “brick” your phone. Basically your phone becomes nothing more than a brick, a paperweight. Therefore, if you are not confident or skeptical in any way, I advise you not to continue.

Backup

Make sure you backup everything you need on your phone (contact list, applications, etc.). A full wipe is recommended when installing a custom ROM, which will wipe the existing data from your computer (this does not include the files in your sdcard). You can find many backup utilities on the Android Market.

#1 You need root

Rooting your phone gives you the ability to make unofficial software and firmware changes to your phone, giving you the ability to hack your phone to improve stability and performance. jcase at XDA was kind enough to take the once complicated method of rooting and simplifying it with with his Universal 1 Click Eris Root App Apk.

  1. Download and install the APK at http://dl.dropbox.com/u/8699733/erisone010.apk on your phone.
(Be generous and donate to a good charity after using jcase’s app)
  2. Open the program, read the disclaimer, and if you’re ready to root, click “I agree, Root Me.”
  3. Once your phone reboots, shut down your phone.
  4. Power up your phone by holding down the Volume Up button and pressing Power to reboot into recovery mode.
(If Volume Up + Power does not work for you, try Volume Down + Power and when prompted to do so in the HBOOT screen, select “Recovery” by pressing Volume Up)
  5. Scroll and press trackball to select “Flash zip from sdcard.”
  6. Scroll and press trackball to select “rootme.zip.”
  7. Scroll and press trackball to select “Reboot system” once the rootme.zip has been successfully flashed.
  8. Once your phone has powered back up, go to Settings and turn on USB Debugging.
  9. Uninstall the Eris Rooter app.

For additional help on rooting your Eris with this app, go to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=742228.

That wasn’t so hard, was it?

#2 You need a Froyo ROM

The next step is to get a Froyo ROM and flash it, replacing your current firmware. There are handful of Froyo ROMS out there, but the one I currently use and recommend is KaosFroyo, the mixed Cyanogen/AOSP Froyo build.

  1. The latest version since this update is v36. Download at http://www.multiupload.com/74IGOONNL2. Check for the latest versions at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=685594.
(Thank Kaos by donating to his “coffee fund.”)
*Warning: Do not download .zip files you will be flashing using the Safari browser or unzip/extract the files (it tends to break the signature, causing you to be unable to flash the file). My recommendation is Firefox or Internet Explorer and save the .zip file.
  2. Connect your phone to your computer with a USB cable, and mount your phone to your computer when the dialog pops up.
  3. Copy the .zip file you just downloaded to your phone (should show up as SDCARD on your computer unless you changed its name once before) in the root/base directory (not in a folder).
  4. Shut down your phone.
  5. Power up your phone by holding down the Volume Up button and pressing Power to boot into recovery mode (like you did earlier when you were rooting your phone).
(If Volume Up + Power does not work for you, try Volume Down + Power and when prompted to do so in the HBOOT screen, select “Recovery” by pressing Volume Up)
  6. A full wipe is recommended, especially when you’re replacing the stock firmware or a different ROM.
(KaosFroyo may not function properly if you do not perform a full wipe before installing)
Yes, I want to perform a full wipe.

    • Scroll and press trackball to select “Wipe.”
    • Perform both a “data/factory reset” and a “Dalvik-cache” wipe by selecting the options by scrolling and pressing the trackball.

No, I don’t want to perform a full wipe – Skip to Step 7.

  7. Scroll and press trackball to select “Flash zip from sdcard.”
  8. Scroll and press trackball to select the name of the .zip file you copied to your phone. (This may take a few minutes)
  9. Scroll and press trackball to select “Reboot system” once the rootme.zip has been successfully flashed. (Your phone may take a few to several minutes to initially start up. You may even experience some lag at the initial boot, but it will get faster)

For more information on the KaosFroyo ROM, go to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=685594.

#2.1 Your kindness would be appreciated

Spent many hours researching, testing, and writing this article. Any contribution would help in my development and writing of future Android-related phones! Thanks in advance.

#3 Improve your phone even more!

Android 2.2 itself makes the phone much faster than you would remember Stock 2.1 to be. However, there are many tweaks and custom apps you can run to make your phone even faster, more stable, and increase its battery life!

Read “Make Your Droid Eris Faster & Smoother, and Increase Battery Life!

#4 Have fun!

If you did everything correctly, you should be experiencing Android 2.2 Froyo for yourself. You should see increased performance and stability. One thing I should note is that Froyo ROMs do not come with HTC Sense; therefore, you will not have access to some of the widgets and apps you had on 2.1 (i.e.: weather, clock/stopwatch/timer). However, there are many comparable widgets and apps on the Android Market.

I hope this How-To was beneficial to you. I will continue to update this thread as newer versions of KaosFroyo are released.

Let me know how it went

Did you try rooting your Droid Eris with this How-To? Let me know how it went and how you like Android 2.2 Froyo over 2.1 Eclair!

KaosFroyo is the way the Eris should be stock! It runs better than my stock 1.5 or 2.1 EVER did! Thanks for spreading the word out on Kaos’s rom!

  • Bradgeorge4

this rom and tutorial were very good! thank you and Kaos

  • Cj

Good tutorial! I have been running the Koas rom for a few weeks now and love it. This tutorial simplified the install process.

  • X290

Make sure to wipe and reboot before flashing the new rom… Otherwise you will get a 20+ minute long boot time :)

  • http://jonsuh.com Jonathan

Thank you, I appreciate it. Would appreciate it if you could spread the word, too! Any and all hits to this blog would help!

  • http://jonsuh.com Jonathan

Thanks, Cj. Yeah, I’ve been running KaosFroyo since v24. Made me fall in love with my Eris again after the releases of the Incredible and X.

  • http://jonsuh.com Jonathan

I totally agree! 1.5 and 2.1 was way too sluggish for me, haha.

  • Rosie684

“Power up your phone by holding down the Volume Up button and pressing Power to reboot into recovery mode.”

I had to hold the Volume Down button then hit the Power button

  • http://jonsuh.com Jon

Hmm, Volume Up and Power should get you directly into the Recovery mode. Volume Down and Power goes to the HBOOT screen where you can select Recovery or the FastBoot Mode.

I’m not sure if this is a variable issue where it doesn’t work with all users. I can include it in the tutorial though, thanks!

  • http://jonsuh.com Jon

Good point. I modified and added a wipe step in my tutorial. Thanks for pointing that out to me.

  • Martin The Monarch

I just ran the 1 click rooting app and your instructions- cool!

  • http://jonsuh.com Jon

Sweet. Enjoy it; I’ll never go back to the stock OS!

  • Martin The Monarch

Just tried to install the release version of Flash (10.1.92.8) and it will not install. tried to install via usb by moving the apk to the sd card and installing via Astro and by downloading directly via the phone. No go and apparently you can’t download it via the app store or Adobe. Suggestions?

    • http://jonsuh.com Jon

Martin, to my knowledge, Flash runs off of Sense-based ROMS; unfortunately, KaosFroyo is Senseless. I haven’t found a Flash version that can run without sense. One of the disadvantages of a Senseless ROM :(

      • Martin The Monarch

Oh well- I still like Froyo over the old version. Are speed dial numbers available in this version of Froyo?

        • http://jonsuh.com Jon

Look in the Android Market for the app “Dialer One.” It provides speed dial features as well as the smart-dial feature that I missed from 2.1.

          • Martin The Monarch

Cool- I bow before your knowledge

  • Josh

What happens if I don’t wipe before installing the ROM? Will it mess anything up?

    • http://jonsuh.com Jon

I personally have not tried installing without wiping, but to my knowledge because the frameworks and libraries are so different, it may cause some things in the ROM to not work properly or as smoothly as it should.

      • Josh

Any backup utilities you suggest? I haven’t tried any, Titanium any good?

        • http://jonsuh.com Jon

I, myself, haven’t tried any either; however, Titanium has been a very popular backup utility out there; I’ve read a lot of people recommending it

          • Josh

Ok I just installed v34, the speed is unreal! I love it. I also used Titanium to backup and re-install all my apps. i would highly recommend that.

hi, great tutorial, but, I am having some issues. mainly, if i reboot the phone after install of KaosFroyo, my phone gets stuck in the glowing android screen, it wont finish rebooting. i have to re-wipe and reflash and reload everything to get a working phone again. ideas? i have put fresh roms on it too, so no corrupt roms.

    • Martin The Monarch

I tried v33 last night and ADW kept crashing so I went back to v32- don’t know if that has anything in common.

      • http://jonsuh.com Jon

Yeah, v33 is buggy. Kaos just released v34, but heard same results; I’m gonna try it now and I’ll let you know how v34 is; otherwise, I’m actually gonna go back to v32 or v30.

        • Martin The Monarch

          cool- keep us posted.

          • http://jonsuh.com Jon

Just posted new instructions on installing KaosFroyo v34. I’m also creating a new post entitled “Make Your Droid Eris Faster & Smoother, and Increase Battery Life!,” and it should be done in a couple days; I’d suggest checking that post out when it’s done.

v34 worked great for me after a full wipe and dalvik wipe.

          • Rdmorley

I’m having issues with v34 and my camera/gallery…also wallpapers. Any tips?

          • http://jonsuh.com Jon

I believe most of the latter KaosFroyo versions have somewhat of a camera/gallery issue; my suggestion would be to just sit tight and hope that Kaos fixes the issues. Using an after-market camera app may help; also, don’t go to camera from the gallery or go to the gallery from the camera; it may freeze up.

    • http://jonsuh.com Jon

Not sure from what version you were going to KaosFroyo, but a wipe is usually recommended when you get hiccups like that. Sometimes, it just acts funny so I usually just wipe and start over. Don’t go v33, I’m gonna revert back to v32 or lower; seems there are issues with v33 and v34 (which was just released)

      • Rayruben

yah, v33 is what i was using. i wiped on every reinstall with same issues. v32, here i come!!!! i was luvin the app to sd, nice!!!

  • Littleoopie

Thanks for the tutorial. This is exactly what I needed. Just updated to kaos froyo 34 and so far love it. I’ve had my eris for less than a month and it was getting so slow it was driving me crazy! Hopefully this will speed things up!

    • http://jonsuh.com Jon

Thanks! Glad you can enjoy v34 like I can, too. Later today, I will be posting an article entitled, “Make Your Droid Eris Faster & Smoother, and Increase Battery Life!” Will give a few pointers on how to make your Eris even faster! I should be posting up in the evening.

  • http://www.facebook.com/whattheek Joshua Ek

This was, by far, the easiest rooting I have ever done to my Eris. That says a lot considering how easy rooting an Eris is. My grandma could do it with this how-to. Props!

    • http://jonsuh.com Jon

Haha, thanks Joshua, I appreciate it. I come across some tutorials, and I would consider myself very savvy, and I often think, “Wow, that tutorial could be written a little simpler.” Stay tuned for my upcoming article, “Make Your Droid Eris Faster & Smoother, and Increase Battery Life!” Should be posting it up this evening.

  • Mcpor7

how stable is the v32 version of froyo on eris?

    • http://jonsuh.com Jon

v32 is pretty stable. Many that are seeing issue with v34 are reverting back to v32. However, you’ll see major speed differences in 34 and 32; 34 is pretty fast!

      • Mcpor7

        thanks.

      • Mcpor7

Can i go back to the officail 2.1 version if i want to? are there any disadvantages of using a rooted version?

        • http://jonsuh.com Jon

Yes, just make sure to find official 2.1 firmware. The disadvantage of rooting is it voids the manufacturer’s warranty so if your phone goes haywire and you need to return it for another, unless it’s back to factory settings, won’t work out so well. I’m probably going to write up an article of how to unroot and go back to 2.1.

          • Mcpor7

yes that would be very helpful. Thanks for your responses!!

          • Mcpor7

            rooted to v34 thanks

  • Gumbyjunior1

What would be cool to do is if you can document how to un-root the phone so in case you need to do a warranty replacement, you can. I noticed this page to go back to 1.5: http://www.pcdphones.com/our-devices/products/46-adr6200vw
However, I believe one needs to un-root it somehow.

    • http://jonsuh.com Jon

Planning on working on it, when I get the chance. Thanks for the reference; I’ll keep it in mind

  • http://www.facebook.com/jtwieme JT Wieme

    so, is v34 not recommended?

    • http://jonsuh.com Jon

Me, personally, I am running v34 right now and with the v4 CFS kernel, it runs fine. Do “I” recommend it? Yep. Will you get those recommendations from everyone out there? Probably not.

      • http://www.facebook.com/jtwieme JT Wieme

Thanks Jon. One more question: v34 comes with the v4 BFS kernal, but you recommend the v4 CFS. I have no idea what the difference is, could you explain that? I found a study (http://www.cs.unm.edu/~eschulte/data/bfs-v-cfs_groves-knockel-schulte.pdf) but it didn’t really help me too much.

        • http://jonsuh.com Jon

To be real general in it’s explanation, CFS is a more stable kernel and the BFS is a kernel designed to kick out more performance, but on the other side of things is known to be a bit less stable. I chose CFS for the stability, I’m not too worried about performance.

So I know that the disclaimer about bricking your phone is up there to protect you and the developers of the app, but I was just wondering how often a phone is actually bricked by this process. Do you know, and/or have you heard of anyone that this has happened to? I would love the option to overclock and do other things, but am a cautious individual. Thoughts? Thanks.

    • http://jonsuh.com Jon

I have flashed so many ROMs I can’t even count. I have never been in a bind where I came across an issue. I do not know of anyone that has ever bricked their phone. My suggestion is to follow the directions very carefully. Unless something is totally out of wack for some odd reason, you should be fine. I used these directions myself (except root; I rooted my phone the old, archaic way with the sdk and adb–the way I have on this tutorial is way easier).

  • Charlie

I installed it, but found it too sluggish, so i went back to xtrom which works a bit faster.

  • Mcpor7

i installed v34 on eris and the multitouch worked fine. But now its not working any idea why?

    • http://jonsuh.com Jon

You referring to the multitouch keyboard?

      • Mcpor7

no to multitouch in the browser the photo gallery. But i found out what was causing it. I had installed swype. After removing it though multitouch is working again everywhere.

  • http://twitter.com/ChrisPriceRocks Chris Price

Droid Eris Alert! This was so easy..once I got past the red triangle sign..LOL

Installed v34 last night and customized everything to my liking! My Eris is now faster, battery life is awesome so far and no longer sluggish. I can’t believe I’ve come so close to throwing this phone out of a skyscraper, but now I think I love it! After install it was super slow and a little buggy and I got a little worried, but after a few hours into Froyo 2.2 it acts exceptionally well! I do however get ADW Force Close a few times and market is a little slow, but I figure it might be my Verizon 3g..I am in overcrowded LA!

Thank you so much for posting this! You’ve done an awesome job! Your blog/Info/Website are great so keep up the good work!

  • http://twitter.com/ChrisPriceRocks Chris Price

    Hey Jon

Is it necessary to uninstall the Eris Rooter App? I didn’t do it yet.

    Let me know..Thx

    • http://jonsuh.com Jon

      No, it isn’t necessary.

  • Levi Bakker

So, I was running a custom 2.1 ROM (PlainJane T2), and decided to give Froyo a try. I obviously already had root, so I followed the instructions here (including the full wipe). Right now, my phone is stuck rebooting on the cool Android splash screen and has been for a good 20 minutes or so. I’m thinking I may have to nand backup to the 2.1 stock w/root and start all over again, unless anyone has any other ideas?

    • http://jonsuh.com Jon

Hm, if you did a wipe, try doing both a wipe and a dalvik wipe and then try flashing Froyo again. If I ever get stuck, I usually just start all over again with a clean slate.

  • pbprodigy

I absolutely love this rom. Thank you for the help man. So far it is running very smooth. Only thing I had a problem with is on mac, safari will automatically unzip a file that is downloaded. so you have to turn off “open safe files” in the general tab in preferences. In case anyone else hits this little snag.

  • Saervin64

I followed the order of #1 above and got to #5 to flash from SD card, but it is saying that it can’t mount the SD card???? Any suggestions?

    • Saervin64

Also, the SD card is in and showing up when I use my Astro file manager and when I hook up to my computer.

    • http://jonsuh.com Jon

Are you trying to flash from the recovery menu and is that where you are getting the error? My suggestion may be to turn your phone off, pop the back cover off, take the SD card out, start the phone back up, shut it off again, put the SD card back in, and turn it back on. See if it’ll mount it.

      • Saervin64

Yes, here is everything that I did…

        1) I put the Universal 1 Click Eris Root App Apk on my SD card.
        2) Opened Astro File Manager and installed the APK.
        3) I also tried it directly from the App Market.
        4) Opened the Eris Rooter.
        5) Clicked the “Root me now” button.
        6) Got the message “After phone reboots…..” Is the phone supposed to reboot itself (because it didn’t)?
        7) Manually rebooted the phone. 8) Shut phone down and turned it back on while holding the volume down button (holding volume up didn’t do anything)
        9) Got to the Hboot screen and clicked on recovery.
        10) Clicked on “Flash zip from sdcard and it tells me “E:Can’t mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p1 (or /dev/block/mmcblk0) (invalid argument) E:Can’t mount SDCARD:

Now I tried what you suggested “turn your phone off, pop the back cover off, take the SD card out, start the phone back up, shut it off again, put the SD card back in, and turn it back on”. And still get the same message.

I don’t understand why it is working for others and not for me? Is it me doing something stupid or maybe just overlooking something??? Please help, because I am so frustrated with this phone right now and if I could afford it, I would go out and get the Droid X today, but unfortunately, that isn’t going to happen anytime real soon. THANKS in advance for any help you can offer.

        • http://jonsuh.com Jon

In reference to what had happened, I have read around that you should reformat your SD card by connecting it to your PC or going to HBOOT Recovery and then selecting Wipe > SD:ext partition. Just to inform you, it will wipe everything on it. You may have gotten this error by rebooting prematurely (I realize it froze but) Maybe this’ll help

          • Saervin64

It doesn’t make any sense, seeing as I could access everything on my memory card in normal operation, but replaced my memory card with a different one and ALL IS WELL!!! I am finally running Froyo and am loving it!! Thanks for everything.

But now I have a new question. If an updated version of KoasFroyo (say v35) comes out, would it be best to update to that? If the answer is yes, will I need to do the wipes again? It is really a pain in the ass getting the phone set back up the way I like it.

  • iRalphie

Got’r done. Love the KaosFroyo. Thanks

  • ron d

has any1 gotten the built-in tethering to work? when i plug it into my computer running windows 7 it tells me that it can’t find the drivers.

  • Anayalization

it wont let me download the link. it just say error.

    • Anayalization

      on the root part.

    • http://jonsuh.com Jon

Which link? Do you mind specifying?

  • Fretmastr

Great instructions. Thank you. Everything seems to be working well on my Droid Eris except for pinch zoom in the browser for some reason. Can’t adjust the zoom on web pages by pinch zooming or tapping the screen twice. Any idea how I can fix this?

    • http://jonsuh.com Jon

If the stock browser gives you issues, try an after-market browser (i.e. Dolphin) The pinch and zoom doesn’t seem to always work for me but the double tapping works. Not quite sure if this is as widespread issue or not, sorry.

  • Josh B.

Jon, thanks for the post on Rom’ing the Eris…my wife has the Eris and had issues that weren’t resolved with 2.1 and they seem to be resolved with 2.2……..thanks

If you come across anyway to root a 2.2 Droid X in less time then what i’m reading that would be good info for those of us waiting for someone to make a root apk….can’t wait for someone to crack the bootloader……..I’m missing my custom roms on my original droid……

    great website……thanks Jon

    • http://jonsuh.com Jon

My pleasure. I’m holding out for a 4G phone for Verizon so gonna live with my Eris as long as I can (unless I break soon…). I’ll be sure to keep my eyes open; may be harder to write a step-by-step writeup without a Droid X to root myself, but we’ll see. Maybe I can find a friend who’ll let me use his Droid X as a guinea pig.

  • Martinezma99

I keep getting the following error messages after trying to install kaosfroyo-v34.

    E: No signature (1444 files)
    E: Verification failed

  • Martinezma99

I downloaded CELBFroyo2.zip and also got an error.

    E:No signature (1340 files)
    E:Verification failed.

Please help. Not sure what the problem is.

    • http://jonsuh.com Jon

Where are you downloading these files from? Are you unzipping these or tampering with these files in any way? Make sure to use the link I provide on my blog directly to download kaosfroyo-v34 and DO NOT unzip the file. Simply copy it to the root of the sdcard and flash.

  • Vuesteve

awsome man super helpfull love it!!!

  • Shalekendar

I tried this and it gets stuck at the (?) load screen. (The word “android” ) and every once in a while the screen flickers but nothing happens. I let it sit for about 20 mins and… nothing. Any ideas?
(Progress so far: Installed and ran the 1 click root. Rebooted. Uninstalled 1 click root while in debugging mode rebooted holding the volume up button selected the Kaosfroyov34.zip file which seemed to install ok.)

  • Shalekendar

LOL, nevermind. BTW, to any onther first time rooters, DO THE WIPE FIRST!

    • Saervin64

AMEN TO THAT!!!! I kinda made the same mistake, I had done several wipes over the past few days and didn’t think I needed to do it again once I finally got my SD card situation taken care of. WOW, was I wrong.

  • Mskracing166

How do you wipe your phone? Thats the stage Im at and dont get it. Do I do it by hitting the volume down button and power then hit clear storage?

    • http://jonsuh.com Jon

After doing Volume Down + Power, press volume Up, then you’ll see an option on the menu that says Wipe.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Romain-Laboisse/100000687632572 Romain Laboisse

    Worked great for me, thanks!

  • Saervin64

I love KaosFroyo, but I’m wondering about updating from v34 to v35 (or any other future versions)? I assume that I would just put the v35 zip on the SD card and follow the same procedure, but a couple of questions… 1) Is it safe to assume that v35 will just overwrite v34? 2) Does a wipe need to be done after updating versions? Hopefully not, because it really sucks trying to get everything back to the way I like it…lol. Thanks again for all of your help!!!

    • http://jonsuh.com Jon

Well you may get better feedback at the XDA forums, I usually always do a full wipe. Sorry, I can’t give you more input on that. It’s usually said to be on the safe side, wipe

      • Saervin64

Ok, THANKS for all of the help…

  • Tyrone8_00

    Worked great! Thanks!

  • Shalekendar

Rooted and put froyo on my and it works great except for one issue: When I’m taking pics with the camera (btw I LOVE the froyo interface!) it places the last pic taken in a box in the lower right corner (again, I LOVE that). When I tap the box to look at the pic it seems to work ok, but when I hit the back arrow and it goes back to the camera, the system stops responding and I have to pull the battery in order to turn the phone off and restart it. This only happens when I try to view the last pic taken directly from the camera screen. If I back out of the camera app and then pull up the gallery, everything is fine. Anyone else having this issue?

    • http://jonsuh.com Jon

I, and a lot of others are having issues with the camera and gallery. My suggestion would be to change auto focus to touch to focus and try your best to not switch to the gallery from the camera and vice versa. I’m sure Kaos is workin hard to get this issue resolved. I’d say let’s just be patient.

I did everything as told and it seemed to go through but its stuck at the android logo with the light passing though it, it wont load up. This is upsetting, Ive done everything thing as told. When I turn on my phone, the Android with the skate board pops up then the android logo with the light. After a min the light gets stuck and the android logo and it resets itself. Can you help me on this?

    • http://jonsuh.com Jon

Did you happen to do a full wipe and a dalvik wipe before flashing the ROM?

      • MLCustodio06

Yeah same things happening to me, im a first time rooter, and it wont go past the android logo on start up, what do i do???

      • Jaimie_M

Same thing here. Stuck on the Android flash screen. Currently rebooting from 2nd install try, 20 minutes in. I have read to let it go about 20 minutes. First try was 25+ and still on flashy screen. Any tips? Rooted fine and followed all steps slowly. Droid Eris

        • Jaimie_M

OK!! Its working now… patience and LOTS of reading is KEY. I took the battery out to stop the looping, did a WIPE (factory.. yes lost the data, but it was all backed up so easy enough to get it all back) Reloaded the ROM of my choice and WHA LA 10 minutes and I was all loaded up. Now off to play with my “New Phone” ! :) Love the new keyboard already!

  • eatyourlungs

it worked great! my phone was very slow with 2.1 because i had so many text messages (i think…like 25,000) and i couldnt delete them because the threads were too long. i considered doing a wipe, but figured i was gonna do that i might as well go with froyo. awesome!

  • Kevhop2dis

When I did a full wipe it asked to activate my phone and there is no key pad to activate your phone with leaked roms

  • eatyourlungs

i am not able to use the camera…anyone have the same issue?

    • eatyourlungs

doh, read through the previous posts and got my answer

  • JT Wieme

if i want to update kaosfroyo from v34 to v35-1 do i need to do a full wipe and dalvik wipe?

    • http://jonsuh.com Jon

Some people have done it without wiping, others have come across some issues. My suggestion, if you don’t mind wiping, the best route is to wipe and start fresh.

  • Ggnarl

So I did the kaosfroyo and it has made my phone better thanks s much for giving a easy to follow guide! I have had the pone freeze once when trying to exit the camera with a low battery, just reset the battery and it was fine.

I am having a problem finding a setting again for pressing the end button to take me to home first and then lock the screen. I set it after I did the 2.2 rom update and now I cant find that menu option again to save my life. Any idea where it is?

    • http://jonsuh.com Jon

Glad it worked! And yeah, Settings > Spare Parts > End button behavior

Jonathan, thanks for your hard work. You make a lot of people lives sooooo much easier. Your guides are invaluable, as well as, easy to understand through to completion. I dig having the ability to tweak settings, apps ect, and love 2.2 I have a question I hope to get help with; After recently updating to froyo V35-1, I seem to have lost the ability to use Htc sync. My Windows 7 x64 laptop no longer recognizes my eris, but will recognize its sd card when put into mass storage mode. The 2.1 had the “connect to computer” in settings. I cant seem to find how or where to go to get it to sync. Any others run into this? Any help is greatly appreciated. Mahalo, Dpcalistro

Freaken Sweet I just Rooted my phone and its awesome , First Time Rooter Here and I am a Fan, this was a good move Thanks Alot phone is fast and I feel like I got a new phone for once. Love it Love it. No problems So far still playing with everything. Will report back latter. Most Definitely Donating For Coffee Fund.

    • http://jonsuh.com Jon

Thx, I’m glad you like it as much as I did when I first rooted. Seems that I didn’t properly insert the code for the donate button the first time so it hasn’t worked! Well, fixed it so if you still would like to contribute, would be appreciated, thx :)

Having one problem at the moment my 3g is not working. I load the browser its starts loading google. Then the browser shuts down. It does it every time i try to open it closes. So i decided to down load a different Browser from the Market, I had Dolphin Browser HD working it open and then did the same as KaosFroyo Web Browser. Any Suggestions would be greatful. Thanks in Advance

  • Odogxb

Oh and I did Wipe the phone before installing KaosFroyo Rom. Full System Wipe and Dalvik-cache wipe. I installed Rom like said above. I can receive phone calls, Sms, not sure what is wrong

    • http://jonsuh.com Jon

Well, I, myself, do not have an issue with SMS or picture messaging. However, I do have some issues with the browser closing but it doesn’t seem quite like what you’re going through.

Not to sound redundant but my suggestion would be to try wiping all over again. I remember the last time I flashed v35, I wiped 3 times in a row (both system and dalvik cache) before flashing v35.

I know it’s a pain sometimes, but it seems for some odd reason rewiping and reflashing sometimes solves those issues. People have been having sporadic, random issues with camera/sms/browser. I’m sure Kaos is working on it, though.

  • Odogxb

My problem was that i installed a 10.1 Eris Adobe Flash apk and it was not taking to the Kaosfroyo web browser. Everything to be working fine now. I flashed to KaosFroyo form Adobe Flash and for live wallpaper. I got Live wallpaper working just fine. Kind of disappointed that Flash does not work yet. I will still say it was the better move to Do this tho phone is faster and battery last way longer. I do miss sense not going to lie maybe because i got so use too it. I definitely miss my Adobe Flash 10.1 running on the Offical 2.1 update with out rooting.

    • Ariel

how did you get the mobile network to work again? i’m having the same problem, my 3g does not work now. Thanks!

    • http://jonsuh.com Jon

Oh, that’s for the first step for the root process. The #2 step lists it as the name of your rom.zip. Glad I could help.

  • EasyVictor

Just wondering… may be a dumb question… but can you root the phone but leave the original 2.1 ROM? Would you have SU access and be able to activate WiFi hotspots, etc?

Or do you have to install a custom ROM in the root process?

    • http://jonsuh.com Jon

To my knowledge, yes, you can root and have SU and have Wireless Tether.

      • Speicher Steve

I have installed the 2.2 froyo for my eris exactly how you said and it works great, however, I have an issue. My screen is on 9% of the time and it says my phone is running 100% of the time. My battery is at 9% and I have had it unplugged for 4 hours, making 1 phone call and maybe 10 texts, also 3g was on the whole time. Any suggestions?

Yes. I am currently running stock 2.1, rooted. I have SU access and tether capabilities. However, it does drain your battery quickly (wifi tether).

This is a great tutorial, but you should include the Nandroid/Nandroid +ext backup procedures. You know, just in case. I am actually upgrading to KaosFroyo v35.1 from stock 2.1 as I am typing this. I was using a buggy version a few months back, and decided to go back to 2.1 but I am curious to see how much KaosFroyo has improved.

On my lock screen it is saying that i have Sprint network..when i have verizon. How do i change this?

    • http://jonsuh.com Jon

It’s just a glitch in the ROM. If it really bothers you and you are familiar enough to use ADB to push the files onto your phone, make sure to install the Android SDK for your operating system and then you can head to http://github.com/punk-kaos/KaosFroyo/wiki/kaosfroyo-faq#UIstuff and it will tell you how you can push a new eri.xml file, which has the name for the network, to replace Sprint with whatever you want. If you’re unsure of how to use ADB I can further help.

I have 2.1 already but it’s not working right at all. Can I root my phone even though I already have 2.1? Will it help?

    • http://jonsuh.com Jon

Rooting doesn’t do anything except opening up the possibilities of making improvements to the phone with custom ROMs, apps, etc. It will help if you take advantage of the apps and ROMs after you root.

  • Swtchftfan

After ‘Verifying update package’ I keep getting E:signature verification failed …. then …. installation aborted

    Any thoughts?

    • http://jonsuh.com Jon

Not sure which file, but the error means the signature is broken. Most ppl that come across this problem download and save the file using the Safari browser. Use Firefox or Internet Explorer and make sure to save the file as is and not open and recompress.

  • Nathan S.

I just followed your directions to get Froyo on my Eris. Only took me 15 mins. Thanks a lot!

  • Hatfield

Hey John or anyone else … I am a rooted Eris user currently running nonsensikal 9.5 B/B Froyo 2.2.1 with 2.6.29-DefrunctCFS-dirty kernel.
I just installed it today and I really like it. I found a couple of minor issues so far. I just switched from running KaosFroyo v35-1 with the same kernel and I really liked that one too. My battery life SUCKS, but so far, its a little better with the nonsensFroyo9.5 ….

    My questions are:
#1- How do I flash a new kernel like Chevy or Slayher over the DefrunctCFS that I ran with Kaos Froyo. I have tried to flash both of the above kernels and they was not successful. Or is there a better kernel to run with nsfroyo 9.5 ?!

#2- How do I improve my battery life ? I get about 3-4 hours and that running very conservative. I have tried several things (and yes,I probably tried that app/technique too)

I am at MsHALFsTEp@GMaILdOTcOM … also at droid forum & xda, too. Wanted to try here though.

  • JLT

I tried the 1 Click Eris Root app in the Market, of course before I read this (just my luck). It isn’t really working and I want to go back to the stock version. How do I unroot?

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_AVMKWRGJZGCH5PHDICPVJJYRVE T-Money

Hello, I updated my eris with the directions you gave me. i then took it to the verizon store to have it activated. They said the phone had been super upgraded and it could not be activated. Can you help me restore to the original settings without froyo?

    • Hatfield

T-Money … I ran into a similar issue when dialing *228 on my newly installed Kaos Froyo. I was trying to update the roamiong capabilities, as I had been out of town. Only then would it try and ‘activate’ my phone.
Im no expert but I believe your phone is already activated (you do have a gmail account to open & sync your contacts to?) …. also, I would question people here before you go to the Verizon store with one of ‘their’ phones all souped-up running Froyo 2.2. It probably depends on the sales person you get/got, but they more than likely consider your phone dead to them (so to speak)

Try skipping the activation and just trying to make a call. If you can make a call, I believe your phone is activated ! Good Luck.

    • Hatfield

T$ & JLT …. try and stick with the Froyo ROM’s … they run waaaaaaaaaaaay, waaaaaaaaay better than stock. You will like being rooted, trust me !!!

    • http://jonsuh.com Jon

You won’t need to “activate” it with *228. When you flash the ROM, just follow through with the setup and it should be activated. As Hatfield suggested, just try making calls and using it like normal. It should work fine.

  • Bgroves2908

Any reason my upgraded phone will not get a data connection? The only setting I could find was “Data enabled”, which is checked. Tried KaosFroyo last night, Nonsensikal this morning – same problem on both. What am I missing here?

  • http://twitter.com/chefty926 Tyson D.

I rooted my eris today and everything is perfect, except I have no sound when viewing web videos (comedy central, nickelodeon, etc..) however the sound works during calls, notifications and even works if i use the youtube app, just not if i type in a web address and view a video. any suggestions?

edit- i contacted cryanogenMod, who I got the root from, but they said they couldn’t help me because they do not support Eris, which I don’t understand since I got the instructions from them.

  • Cbergrun1

I started running kaosfroyo v37 yesterday and my only issue is that my market won’t let me download anything. It says its starting but then nothing. I am setup in gmail and i have cleared the cache and force stopped.

    • Eejjkk

Stock Eris on 2.1 OTA + 1 Touch Root for Eris + V36 .zip = WIN!

Just follow these instructions and everything works as it should.

It works so well in fact that Google just emailed me thanksing me for activating my new Nexus1, LOL
Appartently rooting and loading this makes your HTC Eris think it’s a HTC N1.

Thanks again to everyone involved with this.

  • Nathan S.

Ok, I’ve tried Froyo 2.2 my Eris for a few weeks now.
It’s nice but I now want to switch back to 2.1. What’s the best way to do that?

    • Nathan S.

I just ran the RUU on your link and I was able to go back to stock 2.1. The only thing different from your instructions is that I had to put my phone in bootloader BEFORE running the RUU.

      • Skidaniel

why would you want to go back to 2.1?

        • Nathan S.

I went back to stock 2.1 because the interface is a bit cleaner looking to me and I missed HTC Sense. Also 2.2 was buggy, the headphones jack didn’t work nor did the camera. As far as performance, 2.2 was a little faster but not enough for me to keep it.

this is great works as stated and love it, now for a new challenge. Whats the odds of getting flash player on the Eris as well

  • Nmason3

First off I thought V38 is great for the Eris and thank you so much for all the time and research you’ve put into it….a couple of things that I couldn’t get to work on V38 were
    1) couldn’t get the camera to work – force closes before I have a chance to go into settings and do the focus fix I read about earlier
    2) I couldn’t figure out how to manually link a contact to facebook, so if a phone number wasn’t linked to facebook then they couldn’t get a photo attached to their name or the birthday linked either
    3) I don’t know if everyone is going away from the htc clock/weather widget, but I do miss that – was it causing too many lag problems?

    • Nmason3

  • Kendallsurferayers

How do i get the TeamandIRC off of my notification bar and lock screen

    • Kendallsurferayers

also is their any way i can get adobe flash player bask onto my phone

    • DroidAgain

Probably don’t need this now but….

      menu>settings>cyanogenModsettings>UserInterface>Date and Provider

      Uncheck “Display PLMN (lockscreen)”
      Uncheck “Display PLMN (status bar)”

That should be enough there, but you can uncheck both “Display SPN”s too. The lockscreen one disappears right away. The status bar (notification bar) should too, but if not it will after a reboot.

      Hope that helps! :-)

I love the 2.2 Froyo v38 and have followed all of your follow up tweakings of it…runs great! However the biggest reason for my rooting Froyo was its capability of moving applications to my SD card to free up some memory. When I go to do that on this new version using any Move to SD card app or app manager it tells me that phone has failed to move the application. Is there a way I can enable this to do so?

    • Kevmeister

UPDATE – FIX FOUND: Okay, here’s what you do; open the browser from the home screen shortcut, but just as its loading the default Google homepage, press “Stop” (X) right of the address field. Do this BEFORE it tells you it needs to quit. Then press the Bookmarks button (or go to bookmarks in the menu) and select one of the bookmarks and long-press it to bring up options. Select “Make Homepage”, and close it out. Now, go back (you may need to refresh or hit the back arrow a few times to get the Browser to restart, or clear the history in the Browser menu). Then relaunch the Browser with the NEW default homepage. That’s it! There was something about the Google search page as “home” that was buggy. Good luck!

same thing with mine, but it’s a hardware issue
i plug it into the charging cable and wiggle the cable around closest to the base of the phone and for some reason it scrolls down. highly inconvenient when searching the web or txting while it’s charging but hey, it works for this scenario :p

  • Charlesrichards2009

is rebooting just shutting off your phone and restarting it????

  • Tshows08

Hello, i am On step two, which is getting the froyo ROM on my phone. I downloaded the file which is V.39 to my computer, and i plugged in my phone, but i cant find anything on my Phone under Root/Base Directory…Can anyone point out where I find that at? Thank you Very much!

    • Rxc9616

Root/Base means that you should install it on the main “drive”. Do not install inside any other folder.
Just scroll all the way down and add it at the end

  • Rxc9616

The instructions were very clear. Everything worked excellent and with no surprises.
you can in immediately tell that Froyo runs a little faster

  • Pgmf74

    super awesome!!!!

  • DroidAgain

Between this post and you #3 suggestion… I must say… you have made me reactivate my Eris with these updates. I had switched to my old Storm (while waiting for NE2) since the Eris was soo slow and buggy. I pretty much just used it as a tiny tab for a while. Then I decided to root and upgrade the ROM (v39kaosfroyo). It is super fast now for what it is (400 on my quadrant score previously 190). I am using CPUBoost lite for overclocking since it is completely free but can be setup similar to SetCPU. AWESOME POST! THANKS!

  • bobhope

This walkthrough was EXTREMELY HELPFUL. I have just begain my journey in learning how to actually get the most out of my phone and this tutorial worked great!!!! Before i was running 2.1 and my quadrent score went from 203 to 309. With smartbench 2011, my productivity index went from about 151 to 195 , and the gaming index went from 104 to 205.

  • P Toledo001

Hi I have done this before and it worked great! I loved it. BUT I recently got my HTC Eris flashed from Verizon to Cricket Wireless (it’s cheaper). It’s already rooted, but it has xtr-ROM and I want Froyo again. Should I re-root it? If I do this, will it un-flash my phone back to Verizon?

  • Cwolf3

Just got Froyo on my Eris and I love it! I have found that my GPS doesn’t seem to be working, any ideas?

    • Stephen Willis

Yes, load version 36 instead and it will work.

      • Cwolf3

        That worked perfectly, thanks!

        • Stephen Willis

You’re welcome. I should have mentioned that 38 might work too but I hadn’t tried that and I knew 36 would.

  • Veryblueapple

    Great instructions!

So far I like Froyo! Thanks for the tutorial, I could have never done it without this!

  • Kit

Thank you very much, your instructions are clear. Just a recommendation, shot a video and launch on YouTube. The Froyo is awesome, it worked beautifully except a few things: it’s showing Sprint rather than Verizon as a carrier, I use Verizon; all the HTC great widgets are gone.

    Thanks again and take care.

  • Cat

Thanks for the tutorial. It’s great. I like the new froyo. Just a few things: it’s showing the network to be Sprint instead of my subscribed one: Verizon. The great widgets are gone, it’s not sync with my PC / outlook anymore. Any ideas how to fix it?

    Many thanks.

  • Jackhefner

I can not find usb degubbing?

  • Tylerrey89

when i try to go into recovery mode it brings up a black screen with a triangle with an exclamation mark inside it and an android guy. what do i need to do?

  • Anonymous

Hello, thanks for the tutorial. It’s great. I like it a lot. Just a few things: the carrier is changed from Verizon to Sprint after the procedure, apparently I use Verizon; all the good widgets are gone. Other than that, everything works fine. Have any clue on how to fix the Verizon vs Sprint issue? Thank you very much. Take care.

  • Galindom3x24

Works great just my wi fi is not working when I try to turn it on it gives me an error

  • Anonymous

Hi, do you have any advice about searching for my carrier? As said in the last comment, the carrier that is showing now is Temp and ARC. No clue what that is. My carrier is Verizon. Thanks. Take care.

  • Adam24

Followed the tutorial now getting this for days any time I try to open the default browser. Sorry! The application Browser (process com.android.browser) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again. Some other application s are giving me a similar error.

  • LCopJunior

This is great. Way to go and thank you for the time and effort to make this phone and other phones work even better. Thumbs ^^

  • Cgarrett09

Worked perfectly.. no issues at all.. Except the gallery blurs and goes haywire if the phone is rotated horizontally.. Any ideas?

  • http://profiles.google.com/dennis.b.selby.ds Dennis Selby

Everything is working great. I love the 2.2 Foyo. The only issue I have had so far is getting Adobe Flash to work. Any ideas?

how do i get a voice recorder onto this phone? so i can record momos or music or anything like that ?!

  • dchandler380

I can’t scroll when I get into the recovery screen. All I can do is select, but it won’t let me scroll at all.

    • Lukeglue

I’m having the same issue. Does anyone have a solution?

      • Bjkaz93794

I found that if you Plug in your charger about half way and push it up then the trackball will work. Mine didnt used to work and made me so frustrated until I found that out. Hope it works.

    • Jperry138

I am having the same issue. I cannot scroll. Why is the track ball non-responsive at the recovery screen?

    • Michael

Trackball wouldn’t work for me in recovery, but if you take your USB cord and put it in your phone about half way and wiggle it and rapidly scroll your trackball it will work…..

  • Cincin96

will i get introble with verizon

  • Jperry138

    Dear Jonathan Suh
I cannot scroll at the “Android system recovery” screen. Why is the track ball non-responsive at the recovery screen? The volume buttons also lose functionality at the “Android system recovery” screen.
It is only possible to select the first option that reads, “-Reboot system now”.

Btw, why is this phone worth fighting for again? I forgot.

    Frustrated but gratefully yours
    Joseph

  • Corymitchell

followed the instructions and phone is stuck on the “droid on a skateboard” screen.  Any ideas?

  • Mike

  • KMS

How can I switch back to 2.1?

  • Mary Kerstiens

I upgraded everything as suggested and my HTC Eris did not come back up.  It scrolls “android” in white and nothing else.  I left it for 15 minutes…it won’t reboot w/o removing the battery.

  • Rodney

Followed all instructions all went well. When i go to about phone it still says 2.1. Should it say 2.2?

  • ianeris

    Worked awesome. It’s like a whole-new phone

  • Ian-m-brown

So great man…. if you ever get the gingerbread steps, please get at me

  • Mlinderco

Somehow I lost my applications widget( the one that opens the screen to view all of the applications) and cannot seem to restore it. Any ideas?

  • Theman

Nice article. First time rooting and flashing a ROM. You made it easy! Thanks. I did have the issue with the trackball in recovery mode but I just kept scrolling and it eventually moved. I didn’t have to wiggle cables and stuff.

  • Ramprasad T K

    It working fine

ya excellent its too happy and am enjoying it thank you very much
